Jim is currently Professor of Music and Director of Jazz Studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is President of the NC Chapter of IAJE. Jim is a trumpet clinician for Bach Trumpets and is Music Director of the North Carolina Jazz Repertory Orchestra, and 18-piece big band.

An active performer in both the jazz and classical idioms, Jim is active as a freelance musician and clinician, appearing with combos, big bands, and theater pit orchestras. At UNC, Ketch teaches applied trumpet, jazz history, and jazz improvisation in addition to conducting big bands and combos. He has received 2 teaching awards for his work as a music educator. Under his leadership, the NCJRO has released 3 CDs and 2 NPR televised appearances and the UNC Jazz Bands/Combos has recorded 3 CDs.
